Rémy Hans is a Belgian artist whose work is distinguished by a rigorous practice of figurative drawing, often in blue and white, which blends meticulous realism with troubled or symbolic imagery. His technique is based mainly on the use of light-blue crayon, which he pushes to a remarkable degree of mastery, exploiting to the full the nuances and densities of line that this modest medium allows.
Rémy Hans often works in successive layers of very fine hatching, patiently and meticulously building up volumes and shadows. His approach is at times reminiscent of the classical techniques of etching and lithography, with its rich textures and precise rendering. He plays with contrasts - between solids and voids, highly detailed areas and more abstract or unfinished ones - giving his drawings a strong visual tension.
Remy Hans compositions can be frontal, almost photographic, or on the contrary fragmented, creating an ambivalence between figuration and abstraction, between technical control and freer expression. Some of Rémy Hans' work also evokes a narrative or allegorical dimension, but always with an economy of means: no unnecessary effects, no color, just the strength of the line and the gaze.
