Born in 1971 in Verviers (BE)
Michael Dans graduated in painting from the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc in Liege and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. In the same way that he leads an itinerant life, living alternately in Liege, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Berlin, Antwerp..., Michael Dans expresses himself with techniques as different as photography, drawing, sculpture, installation or performance. This diversity is also reflected in the subjects he addresses (death, solitude, eroticism, childhood) and the formats he uses: from very large format photos and drawings to giant Mikado and the throwing of 17 precious stones in a meadow on the occasion of Kunst & Zwalm.
Since his beginnings, this eclecticism allows him to escape any type of categorization and to surf with ease through the codes of contemporary art. Thus, Michael Dans inscribes each time his proposal in a specific relationship with the contexts of exhibition (architectural, conceptual, etc.) so that it generates its own relevance. In a subtle and playful way, he takes advantage of the different work proposals that are made to him to build interventions in perpetual shift and rich in detour of situations. At the border of objects and attitudes, he creates works carrying messages transmitted with a cynical and critical humor on a background of melancholy, introspection and eroticism.
I am in perpetual questioning. My way of communicating is to question. According to me, the artist does not bring an answer but questions the society to participate in its construction. My plastic researches take various forms to arouse feelings and sensations which are vectors to deliver contents. I express myself mainly through form. My work is in filiation with many artists such as Paul McCarthy, Cindy Sherman, Jurgen Teller, Terry Richardson, Mike Kelley, Bruce Nauman, Peter Land, Claes Oldenburg, Chris Burden, Jim Jarmusch, Aki Kaurismaki, John Ford, Tim Burton, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, Miles Davis, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nobuyoshi Araki, Elmer Batters, Charles Bukowski, John Fante, George Orwell, Charlie Chaplin, Andy Warhol, Richard Prince, Christopher Wool, John Kayser, Eric Kroll.
All of these artists have a particular impact on my work, and I practice sculpture, drawing, performance, photography and installation depending on the situation. I am resolutely conceptual in the morning and expressionist in the afternoon. Depending on the medium and the invitation, the practices differ but my relationship to art is that of a shepherd who leads his flock slowly, some sheep escape but the course is maintained. I admit and find necessary the intervention of others in my work and am absolutely against the idea of the artist who has to do everything himself as a little dictator of his work.
